Seeking Care for Whiplash in Greshamon Wednesday, April 10, 2019
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury incurred as a result of forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. You have most likely heard about whiplash in conjunction with motor vehicle accidents. Indeed, whiplash most commonly occurs as the result of a rear-end motor vehicle accident. Whiplash can, however, also occur during a sports accident, physical abuse, or as a result of other trauma.
Symptoms of Whiplash
The most common signs of whiplash usually, though not always, develop within 24 hours of the injury. These include:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Worsening of pain with neck movement
- Loss of range of motion in the neck
- Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull
- Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back or arms
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
More rare symptoms that you may also experience due to whiplash are:
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Sleep disturbances
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory problems
Seek Medical Care for Whiplash
Chiropractic care and massage therapy are often used to treat whiplash. Whiplash destabilizes the spine—and both massage therapy and chiropractic care can be used to correct this. It is critical to seek professional help as soon as possible after your motor vehicle accident or any other trauma that results in whiplash. Whiplash, when left untreated, can induce long-term pain. The seriousness of the physical effects of an accident is not always known or felt immediately following. It can take days, weeks or even months for major symptoms to show up, which is why chiropractic care is essential to maintaining the health of a spine that has been through trauma.
